| Griot is a French word for the West African "jali". (The female forms are "griotte" and "jalimusolu".) These are traditional bards of the Manding people who keep oral history and family lineages alive. Griots, whose role is by tradition hereditary, are taught to play the balafon, a type of xylophone, and the kora, or harp-guitar. |
