When white settlers first came to the land, Great Zimbabwe was in ruins, and its origin was a mystery since none of the local Shona were still building in stone. The invaders did not want to believe that black-skinned people had built on such an impressive scale, but modern scholars have deduced from excavation of round huts in the vicinity that Great Zimbabwe was built by Bantu Shonas from Central Africa.
