The builders of Great Zimbabwe ruled the surrounding country from the Zambesi to the Limpopo rivers and vast tracts between the Kalahari desert and the Indian Ocean. They traded with the Arabs in gold and ivory and slaves. They may have abandoned their monumental capital because of drought or overgrazing.
