Kathmandu derives its name from a wooden temple ("kath" = wooden and "mandu" = temple) that was supposedly built from the timbers of a single tree by a rajah of the late sixteenth century. Such a building stands to this day in the center of town and is used by holy men. (Ascetic priest, Nepal. Corel photo.)
